FIFA World Cup 2018: Spanish Team Kit’s Hidden Political Message?

In the third post of our FIFA World Cup 2018 series, and on the eve of the Spain v Iran match tonight, Abhimanyu Baheti highlights Article 48 of the FIFA World Cup 2018 Regulations, which prohibits display of political messages on team kits.

The Spanish team colours of red, yellow and blue stirred up unintentional controversy due to its striking resemblance to the Spanish Republican Flag used from 1931-39 to oppose the Spanish monarchy. This flag has been used in the ongoing Catalonian struggle for independence as a symbol of protest against the current establishment.
